Is there an less expensive warhammer army for the beginner to start out with?

I am on a limited budget and would like to play warhammer. It's not the long road costs I'm worried about, but the initial purchase. I'd like to be able to play right away. So is there a less expensive "starter" army for a beginner like myself to purchase?

Also, are the Game Workshops generally cheaper than the indie store? What price range should I expect to pay for a starter kit in Ontario? Sales anywhere? Is there an less expensive warhammer army for the beginner to start out with?
I believe Ogre Kingdoms and Bretonnia are probably on the low end of the amount of money you'd have to invest to start up. Mostly due to the relatively low model count you'd have in an army. Some of the Army boxes they have been putting out when new versions of army books are put out are decent deals as well, for $175 you get about 1500 points worth of models. Is there an less expensive warhammer army for the beginner to start out with?
Well, generally the metal models are a bit more expensive then the plastics, but most armies these days are plastic. What army do you like to play? If you like dwarves or goblins, buy the battle for skull pass starter set and trade or sell the goblins/dwarfs. Otherwise, start out small- around 500 points and slowly expand from there. The models are expensive overall but once you buy them they are yours- plan your army out well so you don't waste money on units you will never play and you are set. For fantasy I play goblins. Is there an less expensive warhammer army for the beginner to start out with?
The bargain route into Warhammer is via eBay. If you're prepared to take models that have already been painted (usually badly) by someone else, you can pick up 1000 points for less than $50. A bottle of Superstrip, from Phoenix Paints, will render even plastic models back to their original, clean state, ready to paint afresh.

Independent retailers are rarely cheaper than GW are more often a bit pricier, but some online retailers have been able to offer consistent discounts of 10% or more. GW itself never has sales.

The basic starter kit for Warhammer is "Battle for Skull Pass". It isn't cheap, but at $75 you get two small armies, a pocket-sized rulebook (only available with this set and much sought after!) and all the dice and other accoutrements you need to get started. There is also a book of scenarios to teach you the rules and a modelling guide to help you start painting your armies.

If you check out eBay, you might be able to get this boxed set for a slight discount. But it's a good bargain in any circumstances.
