Well, for both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k, Games Workshop release a "starter set". For example, the Warhammer version is called "Battle for skull Pass". It includes the rulebook, a dwarf and goblin army, some terrain and measuring sticks. It retails for $60. What I encourage a new player to do, is find a friend that may want to play with you, and "go in" on one of these sets. One of you decide to be goblins, and the other the dwarves (split the miniatures and the cost). Or each of you buy one and still split the miniatures (all dwarves go to one guy and all goblins go to the other). A link to it is here:

The new version of 40k is out, and the new "starter set" for it will be out in December. It will be called "Assault on Black Reach" and has Space Marines and Orks.

Also, you can look at all the different armies here:

Personally, I play the Skaven. Hope this helps...and welcome to the game! How do I start Playing Warhammer?
there might be a warhammer group for your area. I would use GW website to find stores in your area (not just games workshop official stores) because a lot of stores have trial armies you can rent for the day. I'd play around with a couple different ones of those in order to make sure it's a game you're going to like before you start buying an army. How do I start Playing Warhammer?
Go to http://www.GamesWorkshop.com and you can find store locations...It is rarely cheaper anywhere else unless you buy from other players. This game is an investment in both time and money!

I advise you to join in on the GW blogs/boards and ask questions.... This site also has player meet player boards!

This site has all your answers!

As a note, even if you read or here from many players who "don't have time" to help/teach you, sometimes they might be the most vocal but they are the few...the majority of Warhammer Players love the game and want new players to love it too, they just don't have the time to be out posting the rude because they are playing! Just keep asking!
