How can I get started with Warhammer?

I have a limited budget but I really want to play warhammer 40k. How should I start an army the cheapest way possible? How can I get started with Warhammer?
If you're set on playing, consider the armies you have available. I'll agree that the absolute cheapest way to play is to borrow someone else's army, or to buy one on eBay - beyond that, though, there are a few options:

Plastic is cheaper than metal. That's a basic rule of thumb useful when considering which army to go for. Also, make sure you look into the specifics of each army - because they're so powerful, Space Marine armies will always have fewer models than most other armies, like Orks or Imperial Guard, for example. The other thing to remember is that if you buy new, it takes time to build and paint your models, so you can actually build a small army over the course of a couple of months, and spread out your purchases. Also, this is a game where models, if properly cared for, can last for a very long time, so any purchases made will pay for themselves in the long run. I've been in the hobby for 13+ years, and I still have many of the first models I ever bought.

Don't forget, too, that there are plenty of people who won't mind playing smaller points games, or teaming up with you to play larger battles. I painted 16 Space Marines in an afternoon or two, and they totaled about 400 points - perfect to get started with. Eventually, you may want to up your force to 1500 points, but as you get more comfortable with rules and with your army, you can add a unit here, a unit there, until you reach whatever size you want.

Also, don't overlook the power of Christmas/Hannukah/Birthday presents...How can I get started with Warhammer?
Warhammer 40k is not a cheap game. To play you need your own miniatures set, at the very least, which is already pricey, then someone has to have terrain, and rule book, and other supplies.

Honestly, Warhammer, or any miniatures battle game, is not for someone on a limited budget. It's a hobby for people with money to blow.

If you really want to try it out cheap, the only way is to find someone who will let you try their set, but unless they are a good friend don't count on t because many players would rather share underwear than let people use their minis. How can I get started with Warhammer?
you could try a pre-assembled army on ebay. stuff goes cheap-er than in store there, also miniwargaming.com always has stuff on sale. but yea, the other guy's right, none of these options will ever be "cheap" just "less expensive than games workshop".

good if you have money to blow :P

if you just want to play though get one of the video games :P
