I'm looking for a book which will give a general overview of the Warhammer 40,000 universe?

The title says it all, really. I'm trying to get into the Warhammer universe, but I can't seem to find any books (preferably) which don't focus on specific events or stories.I'm looking for a book which will give a general overview of the Warhammer 40,000 universe?

the rulebook has heaps of background, its a good place to start.
the army codex's are also full of background.
there are books full of short stories (FEAR THE ALIEN, LEGENDS OF THE SPACE MARINES ETC)

also try "Black Library" they are a sister company to gamesworkshop that publish all their fiction.
