Can you use older warhammer models in current games?

I've recently got back into warhammer gaming and have some older figures from warhammer (plastic models of the same scale),as the new rulebooks etc don't have listings for older models is it possible (or acceptable ) to use these older models in a current army or do I need to buy all new ones?Can you use older warhammer models in current games?
Once upon a time, Games Workshop changed the rules so that only the very latest models would be "legal" but there was such a huge backlash they were forced to do a U-turn, now all models regardless of age are allowed.Can you use older warhammer models in current games?
It depends, I had trouble with this a while ago and I asked somebody in-store who funnily said that "no man should let a piece of paper tell him what to do!". Basically, there is no real rule for it unless you are going to an event with specific rules, and so long as your friends don't mind then there should be no real problem. If you are attached to the models then I'm sure it would be okay to say that the models are something similar to what they were originally.
